Another group had a family reunion. They had breakfast together each morning. Boy, were they great coffee drinkers! Fortunately we had a giant banquet sized coffee maker. They seemed to really enjoy each other, including everyone. Some even stayed over for the third night. We got to use some of our favorite recipes for larger groups. They seemed to appreciate them all.
The best part of a bed and breakfast inn is the people you meet. Most of our guests are considerate of our property , have good manners and experiences to share. I especially like to hear about their children. I suppose it is just the school teacher in me. I really miss meeting new children with their new take on old things. One of our young couples shared interests and places locally that they enjoyed. It is always nice to have first hand recommendations.
There is a new group coming in for a family reunion this week end. We have made many efforts to cater to their plans. More help, groceries, special dishes and drinks will assist us in making their week end memorial.
Lee Innkeeper

Murder Mystery Wedding

A murder mystery and a wedding was held here last Sunday. What fun! The ceremony was held at the gazebo. The wedding dinner was the beginning of the mystery. Everyone was in costume, already in their assigned role. As the dinner progressed, so did the mystery. One poor guy had to wear a dog collar! The guests were great sports and very talented at playing their roles. The costumes were so great that one could not tell who was who. From the appetizers to the cake cutting the mystery played out. Prizes were awarded. Leslie , our chef orchestrated the whole affair. She has had mystery dinner parties before but this was her first murder mystery wedding. Leslie enjoys the role playing, has done some herself, and awarded the prizes. I have gathered most of our family recipes for an Inn recipe book, So far, Leslie remains uninterested.
Our Easter Buffet has Orange-Worstershire basted slow roasted Ham, Greek slow Baked Leg of Lamb, Roasted Turkey Breast, Vegetable Lasagna, Scalloped Potatoes, Spinach Souffle, Wild rice Pilaf , Fresh Asparagus, Fresh Berry Cobbler, Chocolate Silk Torte, Indiana Carrot Cake , Grandsons favorite , Coleslaw, Ceasar Salad, Waldorf Salad, Sausage Sun Dried Egg Bake
3 kinds of Deviled Eggs, Ice Tea Lemonade or Coffee. Locals and overnight guesrs mixed to make an enjoyable party.
A great benefit in having a Bed and Breakfast Inn is meeting our guests. I am the breakfast cook and often benefit from knowledge shared besides sharing a small part in in hearing about their work and families. Fresh herbs and vegetables make such a difference in our cooking. She has served herbed fresh pork chops cooked in cider with fresh Granny Smith apples. More fresh pies and cobblers will appear on our Thanksgiving buffet.
George has been taking advantage of our great fall weather to paint the Inn. Bikers on our riverside trails need to have a bell on their bikes to warn walkers and dogs.
Logansport and Cass county is a great place to end the summer with small town pleasures.
See you on the trails.
The Innkeepers at Inntiquity

Indiana Countryside

2010 hasm been a strange year for gardening. Plants and flowers both were mature and flowering in April that usually bloomed in May. This made their beautiful colors blend or bounce off each other in delightful or stange viewings. Our restaurant still has georgous bouquets on every table. Some have such commanding odors that I have changed them to allow the food odors in. One great thing about all the rain is less watering is require.

Inntiquity is pushing toward our goal of serving all local products. Mt little 4x8s are packed with herbs and fresh vegetables. We have range chickens, fresh eggs, lamb, and buffalo. our farmers market can usually supply any gaps in produce. We are still using our recipes from our ancestors married up sometimes with help from Food and Wine magazine.

Logansport is hosting our annual Med Flory Jazz festival this week. Several of the musicians, including Med, when he can come, are staying with us at the Inn. We hosted and fed the Rose Society last night for their monthly meeting. A great time for gardeners to share their knowledge and enthusiasm. George is our landscaper and grounds keeper. I fight to keep my 10 little 4x8 vegetable and herb gardens. All are bountiful this spring.

We have had very interesting guests this spring. They enjoy the animals, grounds, antiques and homemade food Some share their recipes. Some share great travel spots. Some share stories about local ancestors. Many keep us updated about their families. Several were married here and show pictures of their children. Bed and breakfast Inns are fortunate that most guests are great people that you are glad to meet. You never know who you might meet next. It makes for some adventure bonuses.

Flowers! Birds, daffodils, forsythia, hyacinths, birds, soft breezes and wonderful sunshine. George gathered bunches of our flowers for our tables. He and Leslie set up tables and the Easter brunch buffet. We have so many foods on our buffet that it takes careful planning. Our beautiful dining terrace is surrounded by glass. It really shows off our pond and gazabo ahd bridge. People enjoy eating there.

Leslie is trying to go organic and to feature Cass County foods. We have neighbors who raise range chickens, eggs and lamb( featured on our menu.) Others grow buffalo, and fresh fruits and vegetables. Our kitchen gardens have provided chives, leeks, and mint as volunteers. Leslie is excited that her hugh rosemary plant survived on our glassed in terrace. Several of her most popular dishes have rosemary as their taste booster. I am ready to plant our new tomatoes, peppers, lettuces and herbs.

Many of our guests return each year. Several live nearby but we don't often visit. Easter Sunday shows off just how goodlooking and sharp they look when they are in a more formal mode. We had many old recipes for them to enjoy. Many of them are good cooks themselves and are being treated for Easter. All compliments are appreciated and theirs mean alot. We hope that we will be hosting them for more years to come. Easter brings new hope and a new beginning with spring.

Tea Parties and Easter Plans

Our restaurant is becoming more popular with speciality parties. Recently, our chef and daughter has put her chef school lessons to practice to host a ladies tea party. I took little part except for the marketing. We enjoyed using many of our elegant teapots, china, candlebras and silver. I felt forced, ha, to taste the beautiful little tarts.
Our Easter brunch menu is featuring many of our popular Items, plus a roasted leg of lamb from a licensed Cass County Farm. I will get to use my mint jelly. We are trying to showcase some of our local growers, including a buffalo farm. Old family recipes + favorites from church and feed company phamplets are so popular that I am pushing Leslie to make an Inntiquity Inn cookbook. I am trying to figure a way to make our hot German potatos stay fresh on our buffet. Leslie is now in serving etiquette classes. We have extensive dinnerware, silver, china chrystal and linens. Our fast pace living has caused many to be unused to formal dining. Our dinners help people learn the basics when this experience is needed. Instead of being something painful we strive to make formal dining enjoyable. We like the opportunity to utilize our Victorian inheritance.
Our special Easter packages include overnight stays , lovely breakfasts and linens plus an inn filled with beautiful furnishings from a slower and more leisurely life style.

Lovers and Return Lovers

Inntiquity is gearing up for Valentine's Day. We are hoping all our former guests , lovers and friends, will be joining us.
We are busy thinking of rewards for our overnight returnees of more than two overnight stays. We have given some a bottle of champagne, others a suite upgrade, and others flowers. We feel honored to have been honored to share a small part of their lives. so0me have returned five or more times. Others are trying to experience each different suite. George and I were lazy and had friends, Norm & Sharon as our personal guests. In past years we have stayed up to watch the Ball drop on Times Square. This time we all said good night at about 10:45. It was great to celebrate thenew year. 2009 was not a great year with George undergoing Chemo. Thanks to the wonderful care at Simon Cancer Center, he was pronounced Cancer free. During troubled times one really appreciates family and friends. They helped us all.
Now we must organize and remove our decorations. Each year we promise we will do better at labeling. It was a wonderful time to catch up on family and friends. Our newest member is Leah Madison St. Clair. She is our 1st great grandchild. Her dimples and smiles made us all happy. My main attraction was large buttons on my sweater. Too bad she lives in Seatle. Our daughter Alexandra lives in St Louis and with her husband Mark breeds warmblood hunter jumpers at her equesterian center, Marquis Farm. Their Corgi's, Shotzi and Penny visited with them.
Our next Holiday celebration will be Valentine's Day. I am open to suggestionsfor an irrresible package to advertise on our web page. Suggestions appreciated. Another proposal was made and accepted here at Inntiquity. So far, hold your breath, evvery proposal made here at the Inn has been accepted. She has convinced me that all the hours spent making her own stocks pay off. Some of the herbs She has replanted in large pots and placed in our entry, hoping the warmth will keep them. Our entry smells wonderful.!

George has replanted some of the shrubs in the kitchen gardens to winter over. He loves rare plants and always buys too many. If they make it to spring, he will hopfully have decided their new home. There are so many different plants that I have urged him to help me label them.

Our Thanksgiving buffet will use many of the saved herbs and vegetables. Foods and recipes from our families, the churches, feed stores, and Leslie's Charleston chef school are prepared in a cooking marathon. I still am called upon to make the pie crusts and noodles. George and I both get stuck with peeling jobs. There are so many dishes that we have a problem findung room serving them. Each year we are fortunate to have many repeat guests plus several newcomers.
We really enjoy seeing all the guests and their families.

Tomatoes Tomatoes

The Inn's kitchen gardens are raised 4x8s. We have 10 of them outside the kitchen door. Some are filled with herbs and some with lettuces. The rest are in peppers and tomatoes. Many people have not experienced the wonderful taste of an Indiana tomato that has not been refrigerated. We have about 15 different kinds. Some have stripes, some have a dark red top and dark green bottom, some are pink, some yellow, and some orange. Some are small patio types with different sizes, different colors and different shapes. I especially like the small pear shaped ones. We have 4 kinds of romas, beefsteak, Early Girl , yellow wonder and at least 6 kinds that I have forgotten the names. Next year I plan to at least make a map of where each are planted. I put the labels of the containers beside each kind in the soil when I planted, but the plants have growntall, bushy and swarm all together and outside their beds.

Leslie has made fresh tomato salad, gazapacho, salsa, tomato basil soup, tomato juice, Bloody Marys, cream of tomato soup, stewed tomatoes , stuffed tomatoes with chicken or tuna salad and of course sandwiches of all kinds, even a tomato and cream cheese sandwich.

The peppers are not as profuse. We have many colors, not as many as I planted. George tried to help by putting mulch on my beds. The tomatoes liked it. The peppers were killed or shriveled. Fortunately we have other unmulched beds.

Summer in Indiana has helped us serve fresh organic vegetables. We have a local farmer's market with open range eggs and chickens. We have neighbors up the road that have lamb, and another with buffalo. Our restaurant has been moving to organic locally grown foods. Our local growers have been coming to our with muskmelon, watermellon, onions, strawberries Our local Frozen custard stands help make summer in Indiana a great cuisine experience.

July at Inntiquity

We had a hot July in Indiana, requiring many waterings of our gardens. George had me put mulch on my vegetable gardens. Not successful. No weeds, but the pepper plants died. I have removed the mulch from 1 bed and am replanting with Miracle Grow. Hope there is enough time for them to grow. We use many peppers in our cooking even though we do not call them mangos as did our ancestors.
Several of our holiday guests were old friends returning to assist relatives and share the holiday. Others were interesting and shared stories of their families and experiences . One delightful couple were newlyweds. Others shared anniversaries. Our Celtic musicians entertained during the dinner hours. Good food, interesting guests and music!
Our partners in hosting were the Crooked Creek stables with good old Indiana horsemen to address any riding issues, France Park, with its waterfall, swimmuig area and great sites to take our famous picnic. There are also walking and biking trails along 2 banks of the rivers. One trail has a labyrinth. So far we have not had anyone reported lost.
Indiana Beach is just 22 miles away. May exciting things to do there. Rides, interesting foods, music and carnival atmosphere. Also swimming and boating is available. I spent many a summer evenings , in my younger days and some older days dancing to the famous bands playing there.

May Goals and Experiences

How beatuiful Indiana is in the spring! I've lived here all my life and still am excited and amazed each spring. We are hoping our photographer is still coming. Her pictures are so wonderful on another inn's website. We are planning to use the new pictures to help to update our wedsite. Her coming has inspired George to new heights for our outside landscaping.
Leslie has planted her leeks and I my lettuce. I am holding off on the herbs. Indiana's spring weather is not to be trusted. Leslie and I are joining forces to have a totally organic local menu. Her Mother's Day menu is a blend of old family recipes, old local recipes from churches, local feed and implement companies and her Charleston chef school. Hopefully there is something for all our guests.
April was so enjoyable. We had a wonderful repeating trio from Florida who are like old friends, another couple that always spends their anninersary with us, and 4 other couples that were delightful just to talk to. We feel privleged to share a small part of their lives. Several couples are trying to experience each different suite. We have acquired several anniversary cards to show our appreciation.
Logansport is having a jazz festival featuring our local artist, Med Flory,An Indian powpow, an arts festival and several base ball tournaments. Many enjoy our beautiful diverse parks and trails plus the activities along our 2 rivers. If peace and quiet along with small town activites does't frighten you Logansport countryside is for you. Leslie searches out family favorites such as Carrot Cake, Wild Berry cobblers, Spinach soufle, Baked ham with orange sauce, Leg of lamb with basil and lemon juice basting, 3 kinds of deviled eggs, Sausage Sun Dried Tomato Egg Bake, 3 kinds of salads, Salmon poached in white wine, Vegetarian lasagna, Fresh asparagus in lemon butter, Wild Rice Pilaf, Mashed potatoes with chives and sour cream, Fresh baked Rolls and Ice tea , Lemonade and coffee. I was drafted to make the Cole slaw, but we used an old cobbler ctust that relieved me of pie crust duty.
We enjoy seeing members of our community that normally we don't encounter. The weather is promising to be lovely. We want to show off our daffodils that line the drive so beautifully. Some of our tulips are showing off as well. George is replacing one of our magnolias and some of our spring blooming trees that did not survive our heavy frosts.
Wonderful odors are floating in from the kitchen. I must check to see if the cats have been fed as it is still pretty cold outside. I may have to help set up tomorrow's buffet. Our musicians filled the inn with music. Innovations and old favorites. The restaurant was busy with both, musician's meals and a funeral dinner. Many of the musicians were creative in other ways. One had written a travel book, others shared their beautiful quilts. All were very complimentary about our food.
The bird watchers had extensive information about the bird's that pass through Indiana on their return to the north after their wintering in Indiana. They have envited George and I to join them on a Bird watching trip to West Virginia. It sounds exciting. Our business obligations will have to decide for us.
Leslie is preparing another mystery weekend. Several people are interested in these fun experiences. The hold up seems to be that most of the mysteries require at least 10 people. We need to put together all the different mystery lovers so they can come together.
I have finally found the creamed coconut that her faboulous pie requires. Hail romance! Our record of accepted proposals is still intact. As of today our record is safe. We know that one day someone will refuse. The lovely young lady said" yes." Our dining rooms were completely full, with all the champagne buckets ,flowers, candlelabras, place plates, silver and stemware. Leslie had a new prep cook, so wasn't as fast as usual. I did not think to check if all our extra servers had a liscense to carry alcohol. As they were not pouring, I did not realize they still needed a liscence. We were upset that people did not receive very prompt service. Most were understanding as Leslie's food helped makeup for it.. We had a very detailed review to make sure we do not repeat our mistakes.
All our suites were full on Saturday , and most on Friday and Sunday. As usual our guests were wonderful at breakfast. We never tire of hearing about there lives and wonderful stories. Some are repeat guests and some are new to bed and breakfast inns. We try very hard to make their experience memorable to ensure they will keep giving B & Bs their choice for romance and comfort. We have had football guests, wedding guests, get-away guests and business travelers, even trick or treaters. All were generous with their praise for our food beds and hospitality. What a great Group. Leslie is all excited about our mystery week end coming up on the 23rd. We are going to be in the Roaring Twenties!
We just posted our Thanksgiving Special on our website. We have fun using Indiana' s great traditional foods. We have inherited family recipes from both George's and my Families. Our brunch uses most of them paired with our most popular brunch special favorites. George is always drafted to slice both the hugh hams and turkeys.. I always make my families pies and noodles ( the only ones Leslie can't top me on) ha! Oyster dressing is one I help with as it is one of my favorites.
Every year we get to see many local families. The children are so cute, minding their manners and reassuring me that parents are still passing on our traditions and values. We just need to get all our dining rooms and food ready. Let the wonderful Thanksgiving praise and odors free.
Lee, Innkeeper, Inntiquity

Lucky Lovers

Inntiquity has had many lovers in the 20 plus years we have been an inn. Some are returning for anniversaries, some bring their children, many have our romantic candlelight champagne dinner. Our most outstanding statistic is the success rate of the marriage proposals. So far 23 prosposals , that we know of , have been accepted here. Most by men, but we know of 2 by women. Of course our record will eventually be broken or else we have not found out about any refusals. Be that as it may, we are honored to have our efforts toward providing a romantic atmosphere rewarded. Innkeeping is hard work, but the wonderful guests make up for it by allowing us to have a small part in so many lives.

From the beautiful brides climbing up the stairs in their wedding gowns, to the ones getting married in our gazebo, we have yet to see one that is not especially beauriful on their day. Our restaurant has hosted groups of retiring nuns, rehersal dinners, receptions of many kinds, showers, teas, funeral dinners and seminars. All of these events gives George the opportunity to utilize the many silver serving pieces's from his family and our antique collections. Many weddings have been held here. Our gardens have been especially lovely after a cold start.

Experiences at Inntiquity, A Country Inn

George has finally completed the bridge over one of our ponds. Our kitchen uses recipes from old implement magazines, church publications, old family recipes - Auntie's Sugar cookies, Poor House Cookies ,Grandma's Cream Pie, German Potato Salad Lucille's homemade Ice Cream- and too many others to mention. Some Leslie profits from as in her Guiness Cake. We have thought of offering a cooking school weekend.
Our Easter Buffet gave us a chance to share our food with with 87 guests. We loved having them. They are always so complimentary.
Since April is almost here in Indiana we are all excited about getting our new plants and putting them in our beds. George has 23 acres minus my 10 eight by four herb and vegetable plots. Amazing how many people have never experienced an unrefridgerated tomato!
